Almost a year!
It's been almost a year since I last posted on this site. To tell the truth, I had almost forgotten it. However, I think with some newfound time on my hands, I will check in more frequently.
What crazy weather we have been having recently. Temps in the 40's in January. Personally, I like it- but it has to be killing people who make their living selling items such as snowmobiles, snow throwers, skis, ice fishing equipment and so forth.
The warm weather has saved our home heating costs somewhat this season. Fuel oil and gas have both been lower this year and you have to at least in part, attribute it to PORTERS CASH FUEL of Island Falls. When they took over the operatiopn of the Littleton C&W station, gas prices dropped 17 cents a gallon within the hour.
While local dealers (hint Exxon ) have kept the price artificially high for years, it is nice to see someone stand up to them. I for one, am supporting Porters. I hope you do also,
The local drug problem has taken center stage this year. Our communities have tried to take a proactive approach. We have had some large meetings, that were well attended. People seem to want to rid the area of the problem.
.........UNLESS, the problem occurs in a "star" athlete. Houlton High Schools current drug policy is a basic joke in my opinion. We have seen a female athlete dismissed from the soccer team near the seasons end, but you can be sure she was allowed to suit up for th ebasketball season, due in no small part it seems, to her stature on the team.
More recently a player on the boys team was caught with drugs in his vehicle. 15 days off from school. He comes back to the team tomorrow night. OH yeah, his name was in the court news today for illigal possecion of tobbacco products. So he is a repeat offender in my eyes.
What message does this send to all the younger kids who are watching? Maybe more importantly, what message does this really send to the athlete?
Houlton tries to move forward; but sometimes it is just the same old story, only with different names.
That's the View from my Couch !
